Assurant Employee Benefits’ employees change the world $100 at a time
If you had $100 and a small team of people, how would you change the world?
That was the question Assurant Employee Benefits’ Community Involvement Committee posed to employees in May. The inspiring and inventive ideas flooded in in response.
“The Community Involvement Committee is extremely proud of the diverse slate of organizations we’ve selected to support during 2009 – and we wanted to have an even greater impact on our communities,” said Joyce Richards, second vice president of internal communications. “The goal of our “Change the World Challenge” is to give our employees a more direct say in the non-profit organizations that Assurant Employee Benefits supports.”
Employee teams submitted applications to the committee for consideration. Six teams consisting of three to five employees each have been chosen to participate in the challenge. Each team has three months (July through September) to spend $100. They can’t exceed their budget, use their own money or solicit funds from their co-workers.
One team plans to purchase a used freezer for a food pantry, another will purchase wish list items for a child abuse prevention association, and another recently assisted two animal organizations with an annual fundraiser, using their budget to purchase auction items.
The $100 budget will be used to advertise one team’s planned rummage sale to benefit two organizations, to which they’ll also donate unsold items. Another team plans to donate to a pet food drive this summer and the final team will be fixing up the gazebo area of a guest lodge for the family members of cancer patients receiving treatment and also hosting a picnic for the guests.
For many years, the Community Involvement Committee has selected a large number of worthwhile non-profit organizations to support through both volunteer time and financial contributions. In the past five years, approximately 65 organizations have benefited from Assurant Employee Benefits’ commitment to the communities in which its employees live and work.
