Assurant Employee Benefits employees build accessible playhouse for children with disabilities
Employees at Assurant Employee Benefits have created an accessible playhouse for children with disabilities that will be auctioned off during this week’s Habitat for Humanity’s “Parade of Playhouses” event.
For the past month, approximately 15 employees have used their own tools to decorate a pre-constructed playhouse frame with siding, roof shingles, chalkboard paint and other decorative items. They have also widened the front door and built a porch ramp to the barn-themed structure to accommodate wheelchair-bound kids.
The playhouse will be on display at Crown Center Square beginning Thursday, April 23. The playhouse auction will take place on Saturday, April 25 at 2:00 p.m.
“Assurant Employee Benefits focuses on assisting workers with disabilities, their families, and people with special needs, so it made sense for us to build a playhouse that accommodates children with special needs,” says Paula Doran, chairperson of Assurant Employee Benefits’ volunteer effort. “This project has allowed us to support Habitat for Humanity, while bringing attention to an issue that is important to our organization and our customers.”
The Parade of Playhouses is a collaboration of Habitat for Humanity Kansas City, Heartland Habitat for Humanity and Truman Heritage Habitat for Humanity, the three Kansas City metro area affiliates of Habitat for Humanity International. Habitat for Humanity builds and repairs housing to revitalize impoverished areas.
