Montana Life Insurance Company is incorporated in Montana.

1938

Company changes its name to Western Life Insurance Company.

1962

Western Life Insurance Company, a Montana company, is merged into Western Life Insurance Company, a Minnesota company.

1975

Western Home Office of Mutual Benefit Life Company, based in Newark, N.J., opens in Kansas City with responsibility for all individual and group business in the western half of the United States.

1991 - 92

In October, AMEV of Europe purchases the Kansas City-based group business division of Mutual Benefit Life Company and merges it with Western Life Insurance Company of Woodbury, Minnesota, which AMEV also owns. In January, Western Life Insurance Company is renamed Fortis Benefits Insurance Company.

2001

On July 12, Fortis, Inc. acquires CORE with divisions or subsidiaries providing employee absence management, turnkey facility to write group disability insurance, Social Security disability advocacy and peer review analysis. These businesses are closely aligned with the products and services of Fortis Benefits.

On December 31, Fortis, Inc. acquires the Dental Benefits Division of Protective Life Insurance Company to position Fortis Benefits as a leader in the voluntary dental benefits market.

2004

On February 5, stock in Assurant, Inc. (AIZ) begins trading on the New York Stock Exchange in the first billion-dollar initial public offering of 2004.

On March 1, the business unit marketing name is changed from Fortis Benefits to Assurant Employee Benefits.

On October 1, Fortis Benefits re-domesticates to Iowa.

2005

On September 6, the legal entity name changed from Fortis Benefits Insurance Company to Union Security Insurance Company.

2008

In January, Fortis Insurance N.V. holdings in Assurant common stock dropped below 5% of all outstanding shares.

2009

On September 30, Union Security Insurance Company redomesticated to Kansas.
